In the world of search engine optimisation, keywords are as important as having your telephone number listed. Keywords open the doors for many new visitors to your website you wouldn’t normally receive. So how do they work?
Keywords are words used within your content, the content being the information held on each page of your website. Keywords would normally account for 3-5% of your complete word count, but this can vary. If you have someone dealing with your link building services they would be able to advise you of what percentage and how many words your content should have.
Link building services will also undertake some keyword research for you, this is basically what is being searched for online and how it relates to your business. Your service provider will also ascertain any gaps in the market for the use of unique keywords that help you stand out from your competitors.
When you have finalised what keywords you are using it’s time to include them into some original content, this content will be fresh and based around your keywords. This ensures that the content can be read easily and the keywords do not look out of place.
Once you have your content online complete with your keywords you may be expecting a sudden influx of traffic, however some patience is required as it can take a few weeks for the search engines to absorb your content and start feeding it out to the rest of the world.
Another useful way to utilise keywords in to include them in each page of your website, so for example if you have five pages all related to different subjects within your website you would have the keyword as the page title, for example www.yoursite.com/sitequestions. This will point anyone looking for site questions to that specific page.
You may also be able to use them in your website overall, if a keyword is popular and can be utilised as part of your webpage than this will also help traffic flow to your website, however it is important that the keyword and title refer to your nature of business so it is not misleading visitors.
So whilst keywords alone are not the be all and end all of search engine optimisation, you will find that when used in partnership with other search engine optimisation procedures they will help you gain traffic and earn a healthy page ranking.
